✦ Synopsis

Professor Fred Nilsson died on July 28, 2009 in Stockholm after a short illness. He made several seminal contributions to fracture mechanics and is sorely missed by his friends and colleagues.

Fred was born in 1946 in Stockholm. He earned his M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering in 1970 and his Ph.D. in Solid Mechanics in 1973, both at KTH, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. After a short period in industry he returned to KTH where, during the late 70s, he achieved some of his most important results in the field of dynamic fracture mechanics.

During 1981-1985 Fred was again back in industry, both as a consultant and a research leader at the Swedish Nuclear Power Plant Inspectorate working to develop reliable design methods for pressure vessels. The attraction from academia was still strong though and in 1985 he was appointed professor in Solid Mechanics at Uppsala University. Staying until 1989, he returned to KTH as acting professor and in 1991 was given a full chair in Solid Mechanics. The circle was closed.

Fred Nilsson's research concerned fracture mechanics in a wide sense based on analytical, numerical and experimental investigations. He has authored and co-authored close to a hundred papers in journals and conference proceedings. Particular topics have dealt with crack growth initiation, steady and dynamic propagation and arrest, constant and variable loading, safety and fracture assessment, fatigue life, probability and risk-band approach, life-time estimation of components
