Franny i Zooey està format per dos relats ambientats a Manhattan el 1955. Franny i Zooey són dos dels germans Glass, la omnipresent (i genial) família que apareix en altres obres de Salinger. La primera història la protagonitza Franny, una estudiant en una prestigiosa escola d'art femenina que se sent desencantada amb l'egoisme i la falta d'autenticitat que veu al seu voltant. La segona història la protagonitza el seu germà Zooey Glass, un jove superdotat i amb el caràcter una mica endurit que tractarà d'ajudar a eludir la crisi existencial en què s'ha sumit Franny.
