β¦ Synopsis
In their study of the nature and purposes of a free society and how it may be maintained in twentieth century America, the Consultants on the Basic Issues to the Fund for the Republic invited Raymond Aron to join them during their meetings in October of 1958 for a discussion of the new Constitution which had just been drafted for the Fifth Republic of France. The Consultants believed that Professor Aron's views on the new Constitution for his country would contribute to their own examination of the American Constitution and its applicability to the problems of our society. Their belief was justified.
Professor Aron's presentation is now offered in book form, together with some of the discussion that followed his talk, because the sponsors and the publisher think that the material will be of interest to a wider audience.
The Consultants on the Basic Issues to the Fund for the Republic are A. A. Berle, Jr., Scott Buchanan, Eugene Burdick, Eric F. Goldman, Clark Ken-, Henry R. Luce, John Courtney Murray, S.J., Reinhold Niebuhr, and Isidor I. Rabi.
