Foerster was a many-sided doctor. He was a neurophysiologist of great repute; he was a neurosurgeon and introduced (Foerster's operation) posterior root section for the diminution of spasticity; and he was a naturalist. His writings were known the world over and he was a great friend of Harvey Cushing.

He received no less than five medals for his work and he was honoured by membership of no less than thirty scientific societies both in Europe and America.

There are some excellent photographs of Foerster both at his home and at his clinic and in the operating theatre.

Adolf Rosenauer and Joseph P. Evans have made an excellent translation from the German.
