Abstract

Characterization of epoxy–maraging steel failure interface was carrier out using SEM/EDAX, Auger and FTIR spectroscopies. The steel surface was either sand blasted and/or treated in superheated steam (SHS) prior to epoxy bonding. Acetone wipe served as a reference. Experimental results showed that sand blasting is necessary prior to SHS treatment to avoid premature oxide–steel interfacial failure. In opening crack‐type wedge specimens, the interfacial failure that appears visually to be interfacial in nature, is really a mixed mode type failure as indicated by EDAX analysis and Auger spectroscopy. FTIR indicated that SHS treated maraging steel is superior, with respect to resistance of water absorption, when the bonded wedge specimens have been exposed to high humidity.

A new data reduction scheme is proposed for measuring the critical fracture energy of adhesive joints under pure mode II loading using the End Notched Flexure test. The method is based on the crack equivalent concept and does not require crack length monitoring during propagation, which is very diff
