✦ Synopsis

Finite element procedures were used to generate stress intensity, crack mouth compliance, and load point compliance for a segment from a cylindrical shell. Stress intensity and crack mouth compliance were found to be independent of span length for a large range of crack lengths when suitably nommhxed Load point compliance was not truly independent of span length. The experimental procedures developed: made it possible to perform tests with ease and reliability. Fracture test results showed good correlation with analytical predictions for the two alloys considered. crack length out of plane thickness of specimen distance between neutral axis and centroidal axis of curved beam131 Youngls modulus stress intensity as defined in reference 7 stress intensity load radius to crack tip inner radius of specimen outer radius of specimen opening displacement between the two crack faces at the inner radius of the specimen ratio of centroidal shearing stress to average shearing stress[3] load point displacement angular span of segment specimen Poisson's ratio angular coordinate on beam nondimensional displacement factor for a thick curbed beam yield stress _

Fracture toughness testing in the transition region often causes ductile tearing to precede cleavage fracture. The effect of ductile tearing on the fracture probability has in recent years become a subject of great interest. Briickner and Munz have developed a Weibull statistics based model to descr

When doing fracture toughness determinations on gray cast iron it is impossible to determine the length of the fatigue precrack from studies of the fracture surface. The reason for this is that the crack front is no well-defined line between ruptured and unruptured material but a zone of finite leng
