## Abstract The vital first phase of the overall materials study to protract the life of the total joint replacements is the identification of the fracture toughness and fatigue properties of bone cements. Information gained from fatigue testing, performed in a manner which simulates __in vivo__ co

β¦ Synopsis
The effective fracture toughness of a range of cement pastes and mortars have been measured using both a notched beam and a doublt cantilever beam method. The influence of slze and quality of aggregate on the effective toughness has been studied as the cracks advance. The observed values of fracture toughness are dependent on crack velocity.

Clinkers of nominal Czechoslovak production were ground in presence of grinding aid (d~rivative of lignin) to specific surfaces 400 -2700 m-/kg and were processed in presence of sodium Zignosulfonate and alkali carbonate (resp. bicarbonate) into pastes and mortars with low water-to-cement ratio. The fracture toughness of a number of cemented carbide alloys have been determined; using a wedge-impact method for precracking. The materials were of WC-Co type with cobalt content ranging from 6 to 25 wt-% and mean carbide grain size between 1.0 and 3.3 pm. Within the investigated composition rang
Fracture surface energy, obtained by the work of fracture method using notched beams, provides a simple and direct measure of the "toughness" of hardened cement paste that avoids relying on complex analytical procedures which may not be readily applicable to this type of material. Nevertheless, it i
An unsymmetric cantilever geometry was used experimentally to determine the critical energy release rate values for cobalt chromium alloy-polymethylmethacrylate cement (CoCr alloy-PMMA) interfaces with satin finished, grit blasted, and plasma sprayed surface treatments applied to the CoCr alloy. Cri
