โœฆ Synopsis

The breakoff test method was developed as an in-situ testing procedure for determining the fracture toughness of concrete in a structure. The testing procedure involves breaking a notched cylindrical core that is drilled into the concrete. The breakoff tester was used to apply a load to the concrete core. The J-integral procedure combined with an acoustic emission technique was employed to determine the fracture toughness of the concrete. Additional fracture toughness tests were made on compact tension specimens and core based specimens (round shaped three point bend and short rod) to examine the validity of the breakoff fracture toughness testing procedure. It is shown that the breakoff method developed gives reasonable fracture toughness values for concrete.
