✦ Synopsis

Stress chemiluminescence has been used to study the light emission at fracture of unaged and aged injection-moulded specimens of polyamide 6 (PA6), high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP). The luminescence which was emitted at the fracture of PA6 specimens was found to be oxygen dependent and was interpreted to be chemiluminescence as a result of chain scission. HDPE only showed light emission in the case of ductile fractures at low elongation rates. PP did not give any luminescence at either ductile or brittle fracture.
