โฆ Synopsis
Fracture in notched beams of maraging steel-Armco iron laminated composites loaded in threepoint bending took place in three stages. Stage I occurred at a critical plastic zone size and consisted of a critch propagating from the root of the notch and extending to a certain depth within the first layer of maraging steel. Stage II was a delamination by intergranular cracking within the middle layer of iron ahead of the sta.~ i cwch. Calculations indicate that Stage I I occurred when the transverse stress ahead of the Stage I crack reached a critical level equal to the intergranular fracture stress of iron. Stage III of the fracture se-q~nce con\i~~ed of a shear failure of the remaining first layer of maraging steel along the plastic hinge emanating from the tip of the Stage I crack.
