✦ Synopsis
New detector technologies are needed to explore difficult fundamental questions in physics such as the nature and existence of dark matter and the masses of neutrinos. Other research areas such as X-ray astrophysics, interface studies in materials science and heavy ion experiments in nuclear physics would also benefit from improved detectors. Many schemes for improving detectors require low temperatures for their optimization.
Thus, a series of Low Temperature Detectors workshops began in Munich in 1987. The Fourth International Workshop (LTD-IV) which was held at Oxford University included 53 presentations and 121 participants from 11 countries.
