✦ Synopsis

The conferences in the Thin-Walled Structures series create an ideal opportunity for the close examination of new research ideas and developments and allow the realisation of the influence of these on structural performance and design. Thin-walled structures are wide ranging and diverse. They include aircraft and aerospace structures, ship, car, and rail structures, bridge, building and offshore structures as well as pressure vessels and storage structures to name some. Thin-walled structures are manufactured from many different materials and by numerous manufacturing processes. Like the thin-walled structures themselves the materials used in their manufacture are also wide ranging and diverse. They include mild and stainless steels, aluminium alloys, titanium, polymer plastics and glass and carbon reinforced plastics to name a few. Material choice is an important aspect in the design of thin-walled structures and different material characterisations will introduce added complexity to the problems posed by these structures. In view of the aforementioned it is clear that the scope of ICTWS 4 will be broad and far reaching and will cover all aspects within the thin-walled structures field pertaining to research, development, design, innovation and practical applications. Papers on any aspect of thin-walled structures which contribute to a deeper knowledge and understanding in the field and which highlight the developments and progresses made in thin-walled structures technology in recent years will be given favourable consideration. The first announcement and call for papers gives an indication of doi:10.1016/S0734-743X(03)00016-2 the general areas of application as well as some specific topical areas of interest to the conference organisers.
