โฆ Synopsis
in 1985; the second was in Nanjing, China in 1988; the third in Delhi, India in January 1991. The purpose of this ongoing series of symposia is to bring together specialists in Asian urban development to present papers on their research and planning activities, to share knowledge, and to develop mutual friendships and promote international collaboration.
The 4th Conference is to be held in Taipei, Taiwan, 1-5 January, 1994. Taipei is an excellent locale in which to study the process of urban development. The largest city in Taiwan, with over 4.5 million in the metropolitan region, Taipei is also one of the most rapidly developing cities in Asia, and the key urban center of Taiwan's dynamic economy. Although increasingly rich and modern, Taipei nonetheless suffers from the consequences of too rapid growth, with severe traffic congestion, expensive housing and land costs, environmental pollution,, and high population density. Urban planners have been struggling for more than two decades to bring order to the system, both within Taipei and within the urban hierarchy of Taiwan as a whole. There is much to be learned, both good and bad, from Taiwan's urban development experience, and to compare with the experience of other Asian countries.
