β¦ Synopsis
The surface-enhanced Raman (SER) spectrum of C7o measured on an electrochemically-roughened silver surface using a Fourier transform Raman spectrometer with near infrared excitation is reported. The spectrum is very similar to the normal Raman spectrum of C7o, indicating little or no interaction between the C70 molecules and the silver surface. A detection limit of about 11 ng of C7o was found. Comparison with previously reported SERS results for C70 showed significant differences for near infrared excitation. In particular, the band near 455 cm-1 was very intense for near infrared excitation but weak for visible excitation, and the band 1564 cm-l was, conversely, weak for near infrared excitation but very intense when visible excitation was used.

## Abstract Surfaceβenhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a new optical spectroscopic analysis technique with potential for highly sensitive detection of molecules. Recently, many efforts have been made to find SERS substrates with high sensitivity and reproducibility. In this Research News article,
Raman spectra of ethene adsorbed on "smooth" silver films and Ag( 111) surfaces are mode-selectively enhanced by postdeposition of silver at 40 K. Comparison with thermodesorption spectroscopy demonstrates that only the signal of C2H4 adsorbed at "defect sites" prepared by silver post-deposition is
