β¦ Synopsis
Fossil resource biotechnology for the beneficiation of fossil fuels is focused largely on the early and fundamental stages of development. More advanced programs in fossil fuel bioprocessing are concerned with removal of pyritic sulfur from coal, coal syngas bioconversion, and possibly microbially enhanced oil recovery. Technical limitations exist, however, in strain improvements and large-scale bioreactor designs. Non-aqueous biocatalysis coupled to chemoenzymatic syntheses represents a new and important technology for fossil fuel bioprocessing and beneficiation initiatives.
