✦ Synopsis

letter NO WASH STEP REQUIRED ''Comparative Analysis of Whole Blood Lysis Methods for Flow Cytometry,'' by Bossuyt et al., which appeared in the June 15 issue (Volume 30, Number 3) of this Journal, is a good example of how an improperly designed study can result in erroneous representations and conclusions.

The study was intended to present a parallel evaluation of six commercially available lysing methods. However, since in our case at least, the authors failed to use the methodology defined in our labeling, the study was anything but parallel. Considering that the authors substantially deviated from our established procedures, it follows that the results obtained were neither accurate nor consistent with the results that would be obtained by a practitioner using our product in conformance with its labeling.

In Materials and Methods (under Sample Preparation), the authors state that the whole-blood specimens were diluted and washed prior to antibody staining to eliminate ''any potential artifactual staining.'' Not all manufacturers require a wash step prior to staining, although this
