The Two Pillars of Charing Cross: The Story of a Famous Hospital. By R. J. MINNEY. 8 4 x 5 4 in. Pp. 235+xiv. Illustrated. 1967. London: Cassell & Co. Ltd. 36s. THE history of the hospitals in London always makes interesting reading, for the history of such an institution always throws light on the customs throughout the years that the hospital has stood and helped the public.

This book is devoted to the history of Charing Cross Hospital. The title of the book commemorates two very important men who, more than any others, made this hospital what it is today.

The book is dedicated to Dr. Benjamin Golding, who started Charing Cross Hospital and Medical School, and Lord Inman, who helped to make it one of the foremost teaching hospitals in London.

From the small beginning of the hospital in 1821 throughout almost one hundred and fifty years of continued progress, the history of Charing Cross Hospital is told in a most interesting and stimulating manner. The list of the Royal Patrons and the distinguished physicians and surgeons who served the hospital make attractive reading. Great men such as Dr. Thomas Huxley, Viscount Addison, and Dr. David Livingstone all graced the building by their presence.

The many and varied ways in which Philip Inman collected money for this voluntary hospital are quite unique. The new hospital which is being built at Fulham will cost A;15,000,000 and will be the most modern hospital in the country.

The author of this interesting book will also be remembered for his excellent book on No. 10 Downing Street.
