Los especializados en la historia de Florida se apresuran a dar por ciertos los acontecimientos más extraños. Pero, seguramente, ningún suceso de los reseñados en las largas crónicas sobre las guerras contra los semínolas es tan pintoresco como la captura, realizada por los indios, de una compañía de cómicos de la legua que se dedicaban a representar obras de Shakespeare..., y la consecuente aparición de los jefes indios en un Consejo de su pueblo, ataviados con las ropas de Hamlet, Otelo y Julieta. En esta novela he manejado libremente esos acontecimientos, incluyendo el episodio antes mencionado, así como la matanza de 1840 en Cayo Indian y la expedición al interior de los Glades, mandada por el teniente coronel Harney, lo que dio por resultado la captura de Chekika y la terminación de la resistencia organizada por parte del pueblo semínola.
