โฆ Synopsis
The large Van de Graaff generator has been engaged in the study of reactions induced in the nuclei of light elements by protons of energies in the range 1.5 to 5 Mev. The yield of gamma rays from the reaction Li 7 q-p--* Be q-y-rays has been measured over this range. By means of a scintillation counter and pulse height analyzer, it has been possible to select for measurement the well-known 14.8 and 17.6 Mev 7-rays. It is found that the yield of these ~,-rays shows a broad peak at 2.1 Mev, the presence of which has previously been in question. Preparations are being made to measure the angular distribution of these ~r-rays in the neighborhood of the resonance.

A new close-coupling scheme for rhe numerical calculation of quantum-mechanical probabilities for collision-induced dissociation of a diatomic molecule by an atom is presented. Fully converged preliminary results for a collinear model are given for the first time.
A method is proposed which allows the scattering problem to reduce to the eigenvalue problem. Unlike the usual method when the scattering phase is extracted from the asymptotits of solution of the Cauchy problem at a given collision energy, in the proposed method the collision energy is obtained fro
