Abstract
The formulation of binary tablets containing an insoluble powder and a disintegrating agent is examined from the point of view of the particle packing theory in terms of the relative size and proportion of the two components. A relationship is found between the overall porosity and the crush resistance, and between the contacts between particles and the disintegration time. Tablets made with an industrial tablet press for three different systems, caffeineβstarch, cocoaβultrafine sugar and cocoaβicing sugar, were tested for crush resistance and disintegration time. The results followed the theoretical predictions. Copyright Β© 2003 Society of Chemical Industry
