In acidic solution, L-ascorbic acid undergoes decarboxylation with the formation of 2-furancarbaldehyde, suggesting that a five-carbon fragment is probably produced as an intermediate in the reaction. Isbell' proposed 3-deoxy-L-glycero-pentos-2-ulose (3-deoxy+xylosone, 1) as a reaction intermediate.
