✦ Synopsis


A set of new peaks in the high-resolution solid-state 13C NMR spectrum of y-irradiated crystalline n-alkanes have been assigned to intact alkanes in the glassy region formed by corruption of the crystal structure. The saturation recovery curve for the interior methylene carbon showed that the flexibility of the crystalline region near this glassy region is also increased. This defect may profoundly affect successive radiation damage to the alkane crystal.
