✦ Synopsis

Engaging Music, p. 65 -
76. — 12 p.

In its almost fifty-year history, rock music has presented its listeners with a wide variety of styles and approaches. From the swing-influenced early rock and roll of Bill Haley and the Comets through the bouncy two-minute singles of the early Beatles and the Supremes to the ambitious epics such as Pink Floyd's The Wall, rock music has encompassed both the simple and the complex, the serious and the frivolous, the emotionally direct and the technologically mediated. This essay will provide an introduction to the types of formal structures that can be found in rock music. Considering the wide range of music that could be classified as rock, this survey will provide only a glimpse of some typical structural features of the repertory. Despite such broad stylistic diversity, however, there are a number of formal types that return frequently in the repertory, crossing stylistic and historical
boundaries in sometimes predictable-but also in sometimes surprising-ways. This essay will identify some of the most common formal schemes to be found in rock music.
