Abstract

We show how to cast an interacting system of Mโ€branes into manifestly gaugeโ€invariant form using an arrangement of higherโ€dimensional Dirac surfaces. Classical Mโ€theory has a cohomologically nontrivial and noncommutative set of gauge symmetries when written using a โ€œdoubledโ€ formalism containing 3โ€form and 6โ€form gauge fields. We show how the arrangement of Dirac surfaces allows an integral subgroup of these symmetries to be preserved at the quantum level. The proper context for discussing these large gauge transformations is relative cohomology, in which the 3โ€form transformation parameters become exact when restricted to the fiveโ€brane worldvolume. This structure yields the correct lattice of Mโ€theory brane charges.

The relationship between conservation laws and symmetries of space-time is familiar. Here it is shown that in a symmetric background gauge field these conservation laws persist, but in modified form. A further contribution to the conserved quantity occurs. It is determined by the gauge transformati
