Cornelius Lanczos was born in S~kesfeh~rvΒ£r, Hungary, on February 2, 1893. His father was a Jewish lawyer whose family name was LSwy; he changed his children's name to LAnczos in the early 1900's following a drive for Hungarization prevalent at the time.
