โฆ Synopsis
A formal solution is presented for forced axially symmetrical motions of viscoleastic Herrmann-Mirsky cylindrical shells acted upon by time-dependent surface traction and/or time-dependent boundary conditions, obtained by using Williams' modal acceleration method. The application of the modal acceleration method reduces the governing equations to a set of quasi-static equations with time-dependent boundary conditions and an ordinary differential equation governing the time-dependent variable, T,(z). The quasi-static viscoelastic problem is solved by applying a correspondence principle to the existing elastic solution [1]. A numerical example is given for a simply-supported, three-element solid shell acted upon by two equal and opposite longitudinal step forces at the ends.
