✦ Synopsis
Performance tests were carried out on a force-cooled Nb-Ti superconducting poloidal coil as part of the R&D programme for the Large Helical Device project. The test coil, known as TOKI-PF, has a poloidal shape with 600 mm inner and 820 mm outer diameters, and operates at nominal current of 25.6 kA. Excitation tests of TOKI-PF began in July 1991, and achieved the nominal operating condition to obtain enough experimental data for designing the Large Helical Device. The stability margins at 15 kA and 25 kA were 1 x 10 6 J m -3 and 7 x 104 J m -3, respectively.
