## Holas and March (1995) established a force-balance equation from the many-electron Schrödinger equation. Here, we propose this as a basis for the construction of a (usually approximate) differential equation for the ground-state electron density. By way of example we present the simple case of

✦ Synopsis
Inhomogeneous liquids in the presence of an external potential are considered. Exact Ž . force balance equations are written explicitly for a the classical case with pairwise Ž . interactions and b the ground-state quantal case of fermions with a general interaction, which embraces the Coulomb repulsion for electrons. Illustrative examples are given in Ž . Ž . Ž . Ž . both cases a and b . Finally, a link between a and b is forged by considering the case of ensembles of finite systems.
