The situation of weakly pinning channels in a strongly pinning environment is simulated in superconducting double layers, in which nanometre scale channels are artificially introduced. Experiments on these devices elucidate the origin of quadratic decrease of the critical current at high fields, which is often observed in polycrystalline materials.
