✦ Synopsis
This is an extensive update of a collection of reviews first published in 1993 in French as Hydrosyste `mes Fluxiaux. In order to gain new insights into fluvial systems, the volume was planned such that each chapter was written jointly by two or three authors. The 12 chapters, which cover physical, biological, ecological and human aspects, are apparently aimed especially at geographers. There is also much of interest to ecologists and those involved in river management, but some of the chemical and biological information is likely to be too elementary for many and presented better elsewhere.
The first chapter (Petts and Amoros) explains the five key features of the fluvial hydrosystem approach, which provide the themes which bring the book together.
