a-(Phenylmethylsulfonio)ketone triflates (1) are treated with a suspension of KF in aprotic polar solvent to give dimeric 2-acylcyclobutanones (2), which are rearranged to y,bunsaturated d-valerolactones (3) by acid catalyst.
