✦ Synopsis

The starting material for the dearomatizations (7) has been synthesized from 1,5-di-($-methoxyphenyl)-pentan-3-one (la) via a modified GUARESCHI synthesis, followed by mild hydrolysis with decarboxylation, lithium-aluminium hydride reduction, and finally treatment with hydrobromic acid. Some spectral properties of the dienones are discussed and some side-reactions are mentioned.
