✦ Synopsis
Abstra&AlksJine decomposition of oxinates formed with the trivalent ions of the metals of Group IIIA appears to lead to formation of the S-quinolinate ion from the oxinate with the formation of an intermediate, possibly oxine. On the other hand, the mechanisms of oxinate decomposition by acid and by light do not appear to be simple. The existence of a fluorescent intermediate in both cases w&8 indicatecl by a shift of the emission maximum. Though oxine may be one product, it is necessary to postulate a second intermediate, such aa AIOxz+ or A10x2+, to account for the increase in emittance observed in decompositions by acid and by ultraviolet radiation. Acid, produced by the photolysis, may account for the similarities in the results. SOLUTIONS * This paper was taken from a thesis submitted by W. E.
