✦ Synopsis


Fluorescence decay-time measurements of the laser dye DCM in various solvents indicate the existence of the trans-cis equilibrium in methanol, acetonitrile and chloroform under ambient light. The short decay time of the cis isomer was not found in previous measurements which assumed a mono-exponential decay. The absence of a detectable DCM cis-isomer fluorescence and the relatively long decay time of the tram isomer in dimethylsulfoxide greatly favour the laser efficiency. The formation of the cis isomer in chloroform is still to be explained.
