Abstract

Using fluorescence microscopy I have developed a technique for the rapid identification and enumeration of zoochlorellae which does not require sectioning. Chlorophyll in algal symbionts fluoresces bright red when excited by ultra‐violet light. In a test of this system using green and white Spongilla lacustris I found a ratio of 42:1 (green:white) in the number of symbionts and a similar ratio of 36:1 in the amount of chlorophyll a and b present.
