✦ Synopsis
A work piece supported in the centre is often found in machine tools, for instance in lathes, gear hobbers, cylindrical grinders etc. Further most machine tools have moving parts such as worktables, cross-slides etc, which are not clamped to but are resting on the supporting parts. During finite element analysis of such machine tool structures difficulty is encountered in modelling these support conditions appropriately. The support essentially behaves like a floating hinge. •
The paper presents two simple methods to represent the floating hinge:
• by special beams • through matrix manipulations computer-aided design
