✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Sedimentation constant and intrinsic viscosity were measured on purified tropocollagens extracted from earthworm‐cuticle and lathyritic ratskin. A cartesian diver viscometer was used to make viscosity measurements at small shear stress and to avoid the effects of surface forces. By comparing the experimental data with the hydrodynamic theories of wormlike‐coil of Ullman a value of 1300 Γ… has been assigned for the persistence length of these tropocollagens. Other factors which may affect the estimate are discussed.

## Abstract The flexibility/rigidity of methylcelluloses (MCs) plays an important part in their structure–function relationship and therefore on their commercial applications in the food and biomedical industries. In the present study, two MCs of low degree of substitution (DS) 1.09 and 1.32 and fo

## Abstract Published theoretical equations for the sedimentation coefficient and intrinsic viscosity of a semiflexible chain are compared, neglecting the excluded volume effect. The theories are extended to the case of a small excluded volume, by applying the perturbation theory, established for f
