Proton quenching of fluorescence, radical and electron production in the flash photorysis of N-acetyl-L-tryptophanamide indicates these processes originate from a common state. An indole photolysis model consistent with these and carlier observations is suggested.

The transient with a A,, at 570 nm observed in the flash photolysis of Nacetyl-L-tryptophanamide is confirmed to be the positive radical This species 1s in rapid equilibrium with Its deprotonated form (hmax = 5 10 nm) with a pK of 4.3.
