✦ Synopsis

Pure rotational, as well as vibrational Raman scattering has been obscrvci from stable diatomic molecules in hi&-kmperature flames. Accurate (rotational) flame tempcraturcs may be dctcrmincd from the rotational line intcnsitics, I-or a hydrogen diffusion flame in air, Trot (Nz) = 1880 f 21 K. T,,t(Hz) = 1890 ? 80 K, T,ib(NP) = 1995 + 130 K, and Tv*(H2) = 1900 f 150 K.

Laser Raman scattering from vibrational and rotational states of N 2 and H 2 has been used to determine temperature profiles for several H2/O2/N 2 flames with and without HBr present. The inhibiting effect of HBr is clearly demonstrated and the derived properties of burning velocity and inhibition i

A technique has been developed for obtaining spatially resolved measurements of temperature and density under combustion conditions. The spectral structure of Rayleigh scattered laser light is determined using a Fabry-Perot interferometer. Spectra in the post-combustion zone exhibit simple Doppler b
