β¦ Synopsis
The nature of combustion and a review of the mechanism of polymer ignition are given followed by an historical background to flame-retardants. Some common agents and their mechanism are described. The main ignition and flammability tests are outlined together with some data. Many examples from transport applications of polymers are quoted. A brief survey is also included of the hazards produced by smoke and toxic fire gases. Current official regulations are examined with the importance of rapid escape of people from a fire being emphasised.
