A simple heat balance has been used to analyze conditions for flame propagation in ducts. A heat flow parameter, coupled with the critical heat flux for ignition, has been used to define the ignition and extent of flame propagation for duct lining materials.

For flames propagating through a nonuniform medium a three-flame structure is described. This consists of a fuelrich premixed flame, a fuel-lean premixed flame, and, starting where these flames meet, a diffusion flame. Such formations have been observed experimentally and probably occur as laminar f
A hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian method is employed to study a laminar unsteady propagating flame through an air/fuel-vapor/fuel-droplet mixture in a one-dimensional closed constant volume combustor. The gas-phase properties are obtained by using a continuum approach, whereas the computation of liquid-p
An optical study has been made of the thermal ignition of a mixture containing 16.7 per cent methane and 83.3 per cent oxygen in the temperature range 520 ยฐ to 750ยฐC and at a total pressure of 600 torr. Ignition was observed to commence in the gas phase at a point close to the centre of the cylindri
