✦ Synopsis

A comparison 1s performed between the discrete and contmuous lmplementatlon of Kalman filtenng and optimal control for a stationary process Theoretical resdts for a pilot-plant fixed-bed reactor are provided as an example It is demonstrated that the computational effort for the two implementations differs only shghtly, and that the discrete version provides more reahstic results at low samplmg rates On the other hand, It 1s also shown that the contmuous formulation may be used down to relatwely low sampling rates, provided the filter parameters are adjusted appropriately It 1s demonstrated that the &screte formulation may gwe an oscdlatory behavior of the axial temperature variance profile Some experlmental results are provided in the adjoining paper [ 1 ]
