✦ Synopsis
The variation of the fission cross-section of U esa has been compared with that of the boron (a, a) cross-section, for neutron energies (E,) within the range 0405 eV < En < 150 eV. The measurements for E,, < 1 eV give the relative values of asss to an accuracy of better than 2 per cent. Values are given for the effective fission cross-section of a thin sample in a (dE/E) neutron spectrum, averaged over four energy intervals within the range 0.8 eV to 100 eV. Fro. I.-U*" fission chambers. (a) Single foil. (b) Four-foil. A: Duralumin end-plate turned down to 0040 in. over central 6 in. F: Kovar seals, enclosed in screening boxes with 8: 0.028 in. duralumin araldited to copper end-plug terminations (not shown).
