✦ Synopsis

The method for firing temperature analysis proposed by Sunta and David (1982) PACT 6, 460-467, was tested using several different types of native quartz and quartz extracted from fired clay samples. Although a wide range of firing temperatures (500-1000~C) was investigated, Sunta and David's method could only be applied, with any success, to one of the quartzes studied, and, even here, it had to be used in a modified form, and failed to provide the accuracy which they claimed for it. The method, thus, does not appear to be generally applicable to quartzes other than those studied by Sunta and David. In one of the quartz samples studied a strong dependance on firing temperature of the sensitivity of the 230°C peak was also investigated; this peak also proved unsuitable for estimating firing temperature.

This paper aims at resolving the controversy regarding the validity of the thermoluminescence sensitisation technique to monitor the firing temperature of different quartz samples, using the 110°C peak. The analysis was carried out in a wide spectral band, using only the heat filter. The present wor
