โฆ Synopsis
to give the 1993 Fire Research Lecture which would also stand as the Inaugural Lecture of the IFS. As has been the custom over the past few years, the Fire Reseach Lecture is presented in this issue of Fire Safety Journal, but in view of the quality of the other presentations at the Conference, it has been decided to publish the entire proceedings. The conference programme was developed by the Technical Committee of the IFS, under the Chairmanship of Dr Paula Beever.
The conference highlighted the substantial progress that has been made over the past two decades towards achieving the goal of engineering solutions to fire safety problems. However, it also highlighted some areas where further research is required, not only in the development of models which can be used by the practitioner, but also in areas of fundamental research. It is hoped that by carrying these Proceedings in Fire Safety Journal, the route between "research and practice" may be more clearly mapped.

This paper presents a design framework for safety critical interactive systems, based on a formal description technique called the ICO (Interactive Cooperative Object) formalism. ICO allows for describing, in a formal way, all the components of highly interactive (also called post-WIMP) applications
