β¦ Synopsis
The non-linear random response of beams is investigated using a (p)-version finite element formulation in conjunction with the method of equivalent linearization. Root-mean-square maximum stresses and deflections are computed for beams with both ends simply supported or clamped, for the case of a spatially uniform applied white noise excitation. Various solution formulations are examined to evaluate factors affecting the accurate determination of stresses and deflections for equivalent linearization finite element solutions. It is demonstrated that accurate deffections can be obtained using any of the formulations. However, for stresses, the order of the element shape functions and the type of equivalent linearization formulation can significantly affect the accuracy.
