✦ Synopsis
A real spatial transform, which maps an infinite outer region surrounding an open wa¨eguide to a layer of finite thickness, is described in this letter. The mapping is introduced in the form of a real stretch of coordinates, and then, it is interpreted as an anisotropic layer in unstretched coordinates. The layer is shown to efficiently attenuate e¨anescent wa¨es, and to beha¨e in the same way as perfectly matched layers. A modified ¨ectorial wa¨e equation is deri¨ed to describe the field in the layer. Then, a ¨ariationally beha¨ing functional, which is stationary about the solution of the modified wa¨e equation, is introduced, and it is sol¨ed in terms of nodal r edge finite elements.
