โœฆ Synopsis

Changes in the fine structure of Japanese non-caking and caking coals heattreated in the range from 100 to 900ยฐC were followed by measuring the carbon dioxide adsorption and the mercury-penetration as a function of heat treatment temperature. The micro-pore volume, the parameter of static pore size distribution and the parameter of dynamic pore size distribution were deduced from the carbon dioxide adsorption by using the intercept and the gradient in a plot of rectilinear form of the Dubinin-Polanyi equation. Changes of the micro-pore volume are compared with those of pore volumes deduced from the difference of specific volumes in mercury, n-hexane and methanol. Changes in the fine structure of carbonized coals may be explained by oozing out of tarry materials at about 4OO"C, the demethanation and dehydrogenation at about 400-7OO"C, and the thermal shrinkage above about 700ยฐC.

Removal of surface moisture, and subsequent removal of dust (-0.5 or -1.0 mm) in an air classifier, can convert unsaleable subbituminous coal fines into an industrial fuel acceptable in certain firing systems. The carbonization properties are studied of two particular coals (Zontag Vlei and Metla coals) which are markedly different despite their similar coalification rank, maceral composition, and oxygen and exinite contents. These coals possess different structural features which influence their carboniz
