β¦ Synopsis
Appplication. The results of this research provide basic information on fine root biomass and production in regenerating pine, hardwood, and mixed pine-hardwood plantation stands. Little is known about belowground interactions in young forest stands except that they are probably very important in determining plantation success or failure. This research indicates that some mixed stands may have more efficient utilization of site resources than monocultures becauseof differences in fine root distribution. The importance of fine root growth and distribution studies for understanding the mechanisms of interference outcomes in regenerating pine-hardwood stands is illustrated.
