✦ Synopsis
The fine and hyperfine structure of the (0, 0) band of the B 2 ⌺ u ϩ -X 2 ⌺ g ϩ system of 14 N 2 ϩ has been measured using fast-ion-beam laser spectroscopy. Rotational transitions with 0 Յ NЉ Յ 35 were recorded with a linewidth of ϳ0.0064 cm Ϫ1 full-width-half-maximum, allowing complete resolution of all strong hyperfine components. The frequencies of the line centers for NЉ Ն 3, together with the complete rotational line profiles for NЉ Ͻ 5, were used to determine the spin-rotation constants and the Fermi and dipolar hyperfine constants for the B and X states. This is the first time the hyperfine constants for vЉ ϭ 0 have been measured for gas-phase N 2 ϩ .
